A ‘masterpiece’ zombie horror flick that secured a flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes has landed on streaming, with cinema enthusiasts being encouraged to seek out this hidden gem.
Independent Japanese production One Cut of the Dead is now accessible on the streaming service and is reportedly completely different from anything audiences may have previously encountered.
Launched in 2017, the picture was crafted for merely 3 million Japanese Yen – roughly £15,000 – yet succeeded in generating over £30 million at cinemas globally.
Viewers can now enjoy the movie from their own homes as it’s accessible through Shudder.
Subscribers can sign up to the service directly or through an additional subscription via Amazon Video, reports the Mirror.
The film centres on a production team attempting to create a zombie movie for live broadcast, intended to be filmed in one continuous shot.
Filming at a deserted WWII Japanese installation, they quickly find themselves under siege from genuine zombies.
Nevertheless, its launch arrived with a caution from supporters.
An English-subtitled version of the preview featured a particular notice at the start.
It reads: “One Cut of the Dead is being called ‘the best zombie comedy since Shaun of the Dead.’ It’s full of hilarious surprises – some of which we are about to spoil. You should skip this trailer and go get your tickets instead.”
The film has been met with widespread acclaim, earning a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic advised: “The less you know going into this masterpiece, the better. If you’re going to watch a zombie movie, watch this zombie movie.”
Another reviewer praised it as: “One of the smartest, funniest, and sweetest zombie movies you will ever see.”
A third echoed these sentiments, writing: “One Cut of the Dead is easily an instant genre classic that renews my hope for zombie films with its triumphant story of one family united in their struggle against the undead.”
Viewers who manage to go in with little expectations are likely to be pleasantly surprised, as one fan noted: “Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly find something new in a zombie movie, One Cut of the Dead comes along and completely upends my expectations of the genre.”
This sentiment is shared by horror movie enthusiasts, with one commenting online: “You really should know very little about this movie before watching, so all I’ll say is that it’s joyful to watch. Also, watch it with others. Non zombie fans will love it too.”
However, some viewers have issued a word of caution for those planning to watch the film, advising them to remain patient throughout.
One viewer passionately advised: “If you haven’t seen it, I refuse to tell you anything about it. This is a movie that you have to go in blind for in order to get the full effect. And whatever you do – STICK WITH IT. You will have the urge to turn it off during the first 30 minutes – but DON’T.
“You will be so happy that you didn’t and be greeted to one of the better movie experiences that you’ve had in awhile. It’s unique, hilarious, extremely clever, and had me genuinely happy after it ended.”
